A Virile Opposition Is A Necessity To Drive Democracy – Ekong Sampson
Nigerian politicians have been enjoined to jealously sustain the nation’s democracy, as no alternative system can guarantee responsible and balance governance.
Special Adviser to the Governor of Akwa Ibom State on Political and Legislative Affairs, Rt. Hon. (Barr.) Ekong Sampson has said that made the observation while addressing political stakeholders in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
He said true democracy allows for choices and opinions, adding that efforts to kill opposition in the system indicate a drive towards elimination of checks and balances, hence dictatorship.
In his words, “Nigeria needs a virile opposition, not proxy chicanery, to drive the nation’s democracy and strengthen institutions of good governance”.
Barrister Ekong Sampson, encouraged faithful of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to remain calm in the face of the current leadership hiccup caused by the recent Federal Court of Appeal judgement. He also said the PDP is strong enough to regain lost grounds.
Ekong Sampson said those who are afraid of the PDP and wish to see it implode by reason of the current leadership hiccups will be disappointed because the party has a resilient inbuilt mechanism that can weather storms. He cautioned that fortune seekers tempted to leave the party would sooner than alter realize they had leapt blind from frying pan to fire.
The Special Adviser declared that where Governor Udom Emmanuel stands represents the true trajectory to rejuvenate the party, and that is where the PDP in Akwa Ibom stands.
The Chairman, Forum of Former Appointed Council Chairmen in the State, Obonganwan Lovina Umoh Effah reaffirmed the unwavering support of the Forum for Governor Udom Emmanuel led Government in the State. She also said the group was hopeful that with Barrister Ekong Sampson’s experience and record as a noble, selfless, trustworthy and intelligent politician, his appointment will facilitate good governance and dividends of democracy in the State
